The Amorentia Sweet Dragon Fruit Marketing Company (ASDMC) was proud to be represented at the very first Dragon Fruit Farmers Day, hosted by the Dragon Fruit Growers Association of Southern Africa (DFGASA). Held at the picturesque Hermansburg Farm just outside Nelspruit, the event brought together farmers, researchers, and industry players for a day of learning, networking, and inspiration.

A Valuable Day for Dragon Fruit Growers
The event was hosted by Kuifkop Beleggings, with operations run by the dedicated Freddie Steyn and his family. The farm is entirely organic and specialises in the ‘Vietnamese White’ variety of dragon fruit—a cultivar known for its challenges in achieving high Brix and top-quality fruit. Freddie opened the day with an insightful presentation on how he has overcome these hurdles to build a successful brand using this variety.

Emphasis on Organic Farming Practices
Throughout the day, presentations and demonstrations revolved around organic farming methods. These included:
- Fertilization strategies for improved yields
- Pruning techniques to enhance fruit quality
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to manage pests without harmful chemicals
This focus on organic, sustainable practices resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom are shifting toward more environmentally conscious farming.
Scientific Insights from Amorentia’s Jason Sampson
As the Scientific Advisor to the Amorentia Sweet Dragon Fruit Marketing Company, Jason Sampson was invited to speak toward the end of the program. His talk addressed several key issues affecting dragon fruit farming today:
- The importance of biosecurity to protect crops
- The risk of biocontrol agents becoming non-target pests
- Invasive Species regulations for Hylocereus undatus and its hybrids
Jason’s insights proved invaluable, especially for farmers navigating South Africa’s strict Invasive Species permitting requirements. Amorentia growers will soon benefit from his guidance on these matters—more details to follow.
Market Opportunities for Certified Growers
The final speaker, Danville September from Unlimited Group, highlighted the growing market for premium, certified dragon fruit. He discussed both local and export opportunities, particularly in high-end international markets, encouraging farmers to invest in proper certification and infrastructure.
A Bright Future for Dragon Fruit in South Africa
The takeaway message was clear: the future of dragon fruit farming in South Africa is bright—but success depends on commitment. Growers who are willing to invest in:
- The right cultivars
- Sound infrastructure
- Sustainable practices
- Proper certification
…will be well-positioned to thrive in this exciting and fast-growing sector.
